Freedom Writers Director: Richard LaGravenese Brief outline of story: The storyline of the movie takes place between 1992-1995. Beginning with scenes from the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Hilary Swank plays the role of Erin Gruwell, a new, excited schoolteacher who leaves the safety of her hometown, Newport Beach, to teach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, a formerly high achieving school which has recently had an integration program put in place. Her enthusiasm is quickly challenged when she realizes that her classes are all at-risk students, also known as un-teachable, and not the eager students she was expecting. Many goods such as jewelries, spices, medicines, textiles, and etc were traded. The Silk Road was a source of cultural and economic diffusion between Asian and European societies. The Silk Road was always active and it became very prominent in the later years. However, due to bubonic plague (Black Death) that traveled, many merchants died and got ill. Also, there were many bandits there who stole stuff so many people started to not use the road. Also, soon, the maritime trade got popular so many people got involved in the seafaring trade in the ocean. The Silk Road became less used and slowly lost fame. Due to the diffusion that went in and out, its disconnection had a significant fee on China. China lost contact with foreign people and lost relationship with the outside world of global ideas, cultures, and technology. China especially became limited in foreign affairs with the Europeans. Not many people traded and not many people came into the Silk Road so it led to the downfall of Chinas economy. The continuity that occurred was that the Silk Road was still being used. Even though all these disasters were occurring, people were still using the Silk Road to trade and to traveling. China depended and used the barter system for a long period of time. The barter system was trading item for an item and relying on interpersonal relationships for business. However, under the Ming dynasty, the currency was changed into silver. Silver was being imported and exported from many regions into China, where thriving domestic economy demanded increasing quantities of silver. The demand of silver was so high that Europeans exchanged silver for Chinese gold which they got more profit from in Japan. The Ming dynasty in China only accepted silver and nothing else. All taxes were to be paid with silver and traded with silver which led to the frantic demand of silver. The monopolization of silver led many people to get silver because only silver was accepted. However, the silver became overpriced since it was used as currency which led the Ming dynasty to not release silver in public. his lack of circulation had a huge impact on the economy which led to the downfall of the Ming dynasty. The change in currency damaged the Chinese economy so the currency changed. However, they used the currency to make the economy running by changing currencies. From the time period from 500 to 1750, China always has been manufacturing and producing their own needs. They imported goods they didnt have or things that couldnt be grown in their region but it wasnt common. Also, China always been exporting because of the amount of resources they had(huge). Why Should We Ban Handguns in the United States Recently in Michigan a six-year-old brought a handgun to school and shot a classmate and killed her. In 1990 there were 23,438 homicides in the United States, 9,923 due to handguns (418). This was one of the points that Nicholas Dixon brings up in his article, "Why Should We Ban Handguns in the United States". Dixon's argues for the ban of handguns in the United States, with the complete ban outweighing the negative effects. He does not argue for the outright ban of all guns, that is questioning the Second Amendment's right to bear arms. Arguing the complete ban of all guns would be impossible which is why he stays to strictly handguns. Dixon's line of reason is that if we reduce the handgun population, we will reduce the handgun violence, which will lower the number of violent crimes (418). Handguns were chosen to be the gun of choice to be banned because of its easiness to be concealed. The handguns were also chosen because they were seen to be the primary cause of the violent crimes in America. In an International comparison the U.S. had a significantly higher rate of homicide, than all countries included (419). This was attributed to the more lenient laws that are in the U.S. more than anywhere else. The comparison of Seattle to Vancouver is used to present this point more efficiently. The two cities are similar in almost all aspects, the only difference being that Canada has stricter gun laws (421). In short Dixon's argument is in order to reduce the number of violent crimes in the U.S., we need to decrease the number of handgun owners, which will lower handgun violence. Even though criminal offenders would still have guns, the amount available would be significantly decreased. The idea behind the ban is to lower the " overall ?pool' of guns" (422). Lowering the "pool" of guns I feel that this will not lead to a decrease in the amount of violent crimes in America. The violent crimes that were limited to handguns will then be transferred to crimes using other kinds of guns. The issue of other guns that are not "long guns" (418) is not taken into consideration. There are guns that are not considered handguns or "long guns", that can still be concealed. The semi-automatic guns that are on the street today are more violent than the handguns that are being discussed. That exclusion can represent a large percentage of the violent crimes that take place. Also taking into consideration the fact that criminals own guns illegally through theft is left out. If the law abiding citizens were able to still buy guns than who is to say that they would not buy them and sell them to the criminals? Dixon argues for a ban For those with prior convictions leaving the law-abiding gun owner undisturbed (422). This point also goes back to the idea of theft, which might create more household break-ins, increasing violence. The issue of gun control in America is a very strong issue for many different reasons. Dixon's hypothetical argument for the ban of handguns presents solutions to lower the amount of violent crimes. Although that lowering the population of handguns might decrease the number of violent crimes there is no way to know for certain that it will.

Stand essays "I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anybody?" This quote from the movie Stand by Me, directed by Rob Reiner, was said by the character Gordie (Wil Wheaton), a boy who was just about to enter Junior High. When he typed up those words on his computer, years later, when he was looking back on those days, he was referring to his three friends Chris, Vern and Teddy. Chris (River Phoenix), was the leader of the little group, Gordie's best friend, and a very complex character. According to Freud, Chris would appear to be heavily influenced, but not controlled, by his 'superego'. Some evidence to support this theory would be the constant talk about some milk money that Chris had stolen, the belief that he was going nowhere, and how he supported his friends throughout the movie. As the movie progresses, it keeps informing us more and more about an incident when Chris had stolen milk money from some girl. "He stole the milk-money at school. He's a thief in my book." This accusation, coming out of the mouth of Gordie's father, was meant to be an insult about Gordie's choice in a best friend. Another way of looking at this quote would be to say that everyone knew that Chris stole the money. "Oh it is. No one even asked me if I took the milk money that time. I just got a three-day vacation." This quote, which expresses Chris' frustration, shows what he thought about the whole situation that he had been placed in. The truth was that everyone DID know that he had taken the money. While these two quotes don't say much, the next quote ties the whole story together. "Yeah. So let's just say that I stole the milk money but Old Lady Simons stole it back from me. Just suppose that I told the story. Me, Chris Chambers, kid brother of the Eyeball Chambers.
